Tiling a bathroom or kitchen: the basics

What the job involves

A tiler prepares the surface (tile backer board, tanking in wet areas), sets out the tiles so cuts are balanced, fixes them with the right adhesive, then grouts and seals the corners with silicone. Regrouting and resealing a shower is a common small job.

What to ask a pro, and what to have ready

Give the area in square metres and the tile size and type (large porcelain and natural stone need more skill and the right adhesive). Ask whether the quote includes adhesive, grout, trims and tanking, and whether you or they are supplying the tiles with a margin for cuts.

Safety and good to know

Showers need the wall behind the tiles to be waterproofed (tanked); tiles and grout alone are not waterproof. LincsDirectory doesn't vet or endorse businesses — always check credentials and get a written quote.

Good to know

large-format tiles need a flat, strong wall or floor and the right adhesive, and natural stone needs sealing before and after grouting. Order about ten per cent extra for cuts and breakages and keep a few spares for future repairs. Ask whether the price includes removing old tiles and any plaster damage that causes.
