Lay flooring or carpet: the basics
What the job involves
A fitter will prepare the subfloor (levelling, ply or screed where needed), lay underlay and the new floor, trim doors if needed and fit thresholds. Carpet is stretched over gripper; laminate and LVT are floated or glued; real wood may need acclimatising in the room first.
What to ask a pro, and what to have ready
Measure the room and say what is there now and whether the old floor needs lifting and taking away. Ask whether the quote covers underlay, door bars, moving furniture, lifting and disposal, and any subfloor work found once the old floor is up.
Safety and good to know
Older vinyl floor tiles and their adhesive can contain asbestos; don't break them up yourself. LincsDirectory doesn't vet or endorse businesses — always check credentials and get a written quote.
Good to know
laminate and LVT need an expansion gap at the edges and a flat subfloor, so uneven boards may need a ply layer first. Carpet grippers and underlay are replaced with each new carpet in most cases. Doors often need trimming to clear a thicker floor, so ask whether the fitter does this or you need a joiner.

Does the old floor need to come up?
Carpet and underlay normally come up. Laminate or LVT can sometimes be laid over a sound, flat existing floor, but the fitter should check the height at doors and the condition underneath first.
