Fit or repair a toilet: the basics
What the job involves
Common toilet faults are a flush that won't stop (worn flush valve or float), a cistern that fills slowly (inlet valve), and water at the base (pan connector or seal). A plumber will replace the internal parts, or fit a new pan and cistern if the old one is cracked or the parts are obsolete.
What to ask a pro, and what to have ready
Note the make if it is visible inside the cistern, and whether the toilet is close-coupled, back-to-wall or has a concealed cistern (harder to work on). Ask whether the price includes parts, disposal of the old toilet and a new pan connector and seat.
Safety and good to know
If the toilet is overflowing, turn off the isolation valve on the inlet pipe (a small screw head you turn a quarter with a screwdriver) or the stopcock. LincsDirectory doesn't vet or endorse businesses — always check credentials and get a written quote.
Good to know
most modern toilets are dual-flush and fit a standard soil pipe, but older houses sometimes have the pipe exiting through the floor or at an unusual angle, which changes the pan you need. Measure from the wall to the centre of the soil pipe before choosing, or ask the plumber to look first.

Why does my toilet keep running?
Usually a worn flush valve seal lets water from the cistern into the pan, or the float is set too high so water runs down the overflow. Both are inexpensive parts that a plumber can replace quickly.
