Electrical fault or tripping fuse: the basics

What the job involves

When an RCD or circuit breaker trips, something on that circuit is faulty: a failed appliance, a damaged cable, water in a fitting or an overloaded circuit. An electrician will isolate the circuit, test it and find the fault, then repair the cable, accessory or fitting and retest before putting it back on.

What to ask a pro, and what to have ready

Before calling, unplug everything on the affected circuit and try resetting the breaker once. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call an electrician. Tell them what tripped, when it started and whether anything smelt hot.

Safety and good to know

A burning smell, scorch marks or a buzzing accessory need the circuit switched off at the consumer unit straight away. If there is a fire, get out and call 999. Electrical work in homes should be done by a competent registered electrician (for example NICEIC or NAPIT registered): ask for proof of registration and for the certificate that goes with the work.
