Boiler repair: the basics
What the job involves
No heating or hot water is usually one of a handful of things: low system pressure, a tripped or failed component, a frozen condensate pipe in cold weather, a faulty thermostat or a pump. A heating engineer will read the fault code, test the parts in a logical order and either repair on the spot or order the part.
What to ask a pro, and what to have ready
Before calling, note any error code on the display, check the pressure gauge (many boilers want about 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, but check your manual), and check the thermostat and timer are calling for heat. Tell the engineer the make and model and what the boiler does when it tries to fire. Ask whether the price is a diagnostic fee plus parts, and whether the part is guaranteed.
Safety and good to know
Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer: check the Gas Safe Register (gassaferegister.co.uk) and ask to see the engineer's ID card. If you smell gas, leave the property, don't use flames or switches, open doors and windows, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. In freezing weather a frozen condensate pipe outside is common; a manufacturer's manual often explains how to thaw it safely with warm water. My boiler says 'low pressure'. Can I fix that myself?
Many boilers have a filling loop you can use to top up to the pressure shown in the manual, and the manual will explain how. If it keeps dropping there is a leak or a faulty expansion vessel, which needs an engineer.
